You've heard the phrase "look before you leap." But what does that mean when it comes to environmental writing and communications?

First, an urban legend about what can happen if you don't look before you leap. Enjoying healthy sales of its Nova automobile in the U.S., Chevrolet introduced it to Latin America -- where it bombed. As it turned out, "no va" -- means "no go" in Spanish, and the name was turning potential customers away.

Environmental insiders make mistakes like this all the time, but you don't have to.

When the stakes are high, savvy communicators pre-test their message before they commit to it. For example, advertising executives screen their latest commercial with a sample audienc ... Read more »

Pop quiz: What are the top two news outlets on the Internet today? Well, according to the web traffic monitoring service Comscore, they are Yahoo! News and Google News. Traditional news sites like and various New York Times properties come in a distant third -- and lower.

That's right -- the top two news sites on the Internet don't employ a single reporter. They simply collect stories and press releases from around the Internet and make it easy to scan or search them.

That's a sign of how much the news media is changing. And if you want to raise environmental awareness, advance gay rights, challenge racism, or promote any other good cause, then you've got to adapt to the new rules of the news media.

The world has become aware of what "green" means and more companies are focused on being green. This includes medical practices, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities where costs are skyrocketing. Not only can EMR Software, i.e. Electronic Medical Records, save healthcare establishments money, but they can also reduce paper and energy use.The following are a few of the ways using EMR software will allow a healthcare establishment to "go green."

Reduced Use of Paper
Physical medical records are on sheets of paper placed in paper folders. With each sheet the folder grows and more paper is added with each appointment or medical emergency. This depletes natural resources and impacts the environment in other ways, too. However, when EMR software is used there is no need for paper medical records to be used. This literally saves tree ... Packaging waste continues to be a problem for the UK, with over 6.3 million tons of packaging entering British homes every year, at a cost of around £450 per family according to the Government's Waste & Resources Action programme.

Manufacturers have come under heavy criticism for producing consumables in excessive packaging with particular angst directed at the producers of Easter Eggs and children's toys, so often wrapped in multiple layers of plastic, cardboard and other materials that all end up in landfill.

However the Government has responded to heavy pressure from environmental groups and international concerns and in 2009 the Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn, launched a new strategy to reduce the level of unwanted and unnecessary packaging. A key part of this was t ... Read more »

As part of the drive towards environmental protection and recycling, companies are being put under increasing legislative pressure to achieve stringent waste management targets for the disposal and recycling of business by-products. This is particularly the case for materials deemed to be hazardous and applies to a range of industrial chemicals and by-products typically produced by industry, including materials produced in the process of photography and printing.

Photographic processing and the environment
Essentially much of the process behind traditional photographic printing involves the use of strong chemicals such as neat hydrochloric acid which was traditionally poured directly down the dark room sink and would end up in the sewers and eventually in the rivers. Naturally this constituted something of an environmental haz ... Read more »

With the increasing emphasis on global warming and the environment, both consumers and corporations are becoming ever more committed and educated about environmental conservation and are taking positive steps. Consumers are recycling at home in ever greater numbers - transforming organic waste by composting in home composters, or recycling in council supplied recycling bins for larger scale processing. The benefits to this are a reduction in carbon emissions, reduced waste and valuable by-products for onward use.

Businesses and public sector bodies are compelled by law to follow certain environmental preservation rules and heavy penalties are in place for those organisations that don't adhere to the rules. Waste products must be disposed of carefully and in accordance with the law to avoid pollution and there are targets around recycled products.
